Hands-on Lab

A hands-on lab, also referred to as a “lab”, is a learning experience in Qwiklabs where you complete a scenario based use case by following a set of instructions in a specified amount of time in an interactive hands-on environment.

Labs are completed in the real GCP console, as opposed to a simulation or demo environment.

Most labs require credits to access, however there are a number of free introductory labs available as well.

Although all popular browsers are supported, for the best user experience we highly recommend using the latest version of Chrome OS.

Please check your device here for compatibility

Challenge Lab

A challenge lab is a hands-on lab that does not provide prescriptive steps and requires solutions to be built with minimal guidance.

It is a summative assessment at the end of a skill badge quest.

Quests

A quest is a learning path that contains a number of hands-on labs. Complete a quest to earn a badge.

A quest is a collection of hands-on labs that teaches you how to use a product or tool.

Quests range in difficulty from introductory to advanced and do not include a challenge lab.

Learners receive a digital badge upon completion of the quest.

If a lab is included in multiple Quests, that lab completion will carry over to each Quest.

This means that you will never have to complete a lab twice if it has already been completed.

How to start a Quest

Everytime you take a Quest, you will access the Google Cloud console with temporary credentials.

To start a quest, all you need to do is:

  1. Open a new internet browser.
  • Note: Although all popular browsers are supported, for the best user experience we highly recommend using the latest version of Chrome OS. Please check your device here for compatibility
  1. Sign in to your Google Cloud Skills Boost account
  • Note: If you do not have a Google Cloud Skills Boost account, create a new Google Cloud Skills Boost account
  1. Select a Quest of your choosing by either browsing the Google Cloud Skills Boost catalog or using the search bar. To find a Quest in the catalog:
  • Click the catalog page
  • In the filter, select Format > Quest
  • Select the Quest in which you would like to register.

4 .You are then taken to the Quest manual page, which includes all the directions for the Quest. Click Enroll in this Quest

  1. You are then automatically taken to the first lab in the quest. The timer located in the upper left corner of the screen shows the total time you have to complete the lab

  2. Click Start Lab.

  • Labs are timed and can not be paused. The timer does not start until you pay for the lab

Labs that appear in multiple Quests

Lab completion is recognized across all Google Cloud Skills Boost Quests.

For example, if you complete “Creating Cloud Instances for Windows” in one quest, you receive lab completion credit for that same lab across all Google Cloud Skills Boost Quests that contain the “Creating Cloud Instances for Windows” lab.

Courses

Google Cloud Skills Boost offers classroom-based and on-demand courses.

A course is a series of training modules contained in a single unit that is packaged to be consumed in its entirety.

Each training module contains multiple activities, including videos, readings, quizzes, and labs.

Courses can be delivered on-demand and vary in length depending on subject matter and complexity.

Find a course

Courses can be discovered in 2 ways: using the search bar or the catalog filters.

To use the catalog filters you need to:

Click the catalog page.

Under filter, select Format > Course.

Click the name of a course of your choosing.

For each lab, you have access to a cloud console for the duration of the lab.

Every time you take a lab, you will be given temporary credentials to access the lab environment.

To start a lab, all you need to do is:

  1. Open a new internet browser.
  • Although all popular browsers are supported, for the best user experience it is highly recommended to use the latest version of Chrome OS. Please check your device here for compatibility.
  1. Sign in to your Qwiklabs account
  • If you do not have a Qwiklabs account, create a new Qwiklabs account
  1. Select a lab of your choosing by either browsing the catalog page or using the search bar. To find a lab in the catalog:
  • Click the catalog page
  • In the filter, select Format > Lab
  • Select the lab you would like to perform.
  1. You are then taken to the lab manual page, which includes all of the directions for the lab. The timer located in the upper left corner of the screen shows the total time you have to complete the lab
  2. Click Start Lab.
  • Labs are timed and can not be paused. The timer does not start until you pay for the lab in case it has a cost.
  • The cost of the lab depends on the number of credits needed.
  1. On the left is the Connections Details panel, which will contain your temporary credentials. These temporary credentials must be used for the lab.
  2. Copy the username, and then click the respective lab environment. The lab will spin up resources, and then will open another tab that shows the Sign in page.
  3. If you see the Choose an account page, click Use Another Account
  4. On the Sign in page, paste the username that you copied from the Connection Details panel. Then copy and paste the password.
  • Note: You must use the credentials from the Connection Details panel. Do not use your Qwiklabs credentials.
  1. Accept the terms and conditions if required.
  2. On the Protect your Account page, do not add recovery options or two-factor authentication (because this is a temporary account).
  3. Click Done.
  4. After a few moments, the Google Project will open.
  5. When you finish the lab, click End Lab and leave a review comment.
  • Note: Only use the resources specifically called out in the lab’s manual instructions. Each Qwiklabs deployment sets a limit on the resources that can be used in each lab for fraud prevention purposes. If you use resources that are not related to the lab, you could be locked out of the lab and lose your work.

How to pay for a lab

Once you click on Start Lab, a window will appear asking how you want to pay for the lab.

  • If you pay with an existing Qwiklabs advantage subscription, this screen will be bypassed.
  • If you pay with existing credits, you will need to click on “Launch with credits"
  • If you pay with an access code, enter the access code
  • If you need to purchase credits or a subscription, click Buy Credits
