DescriptionThe objective of this photography course is to provide a basic understanding of the visual and technical skills necessary to pursue and appreciate photography as a Fine Art. This course will cover all aspects of photography involving camera operation, exposure control, film processing, enlarging, print finishing and presentation of the final image. In addition, the class will introduce a variety of historical and contemporary photography. The student will strive to bring technical control into accord with artistic vision. It should be noted that this photography course is an ART COURSE: it does not address itself to vocational skills and results. Students will be evaluated upon achievement of technical and aesthetic excellence rather than personal improvement, strength of effort, or excessive quantity. Individual creativity, visual problem solving and precise craftsmanship will be stressed. Students will be able to:
Discuss the history of photography from its origins to the present day.
Discuss the importance of photographic history in relation to photography’s position in the art world.
Relate the application of photography and the directions that it has taken, to historical perspectives.
Analyze the relationships between photography and the other visual arts.
Compare and contrast noteworthy photographers with respect to style, technique, and success of the presentation.
Define and apply the specialized vocabulary used in digital photography.
Describe the various types of digital cameras and other image capturing devices; types of electronic outputting; storage and filing systems; and image editing software.
Operate various types of digital cameras.
Identify and manipulate the basic tools of image editing programs.
