Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances, collectively known as "PFAS" encompass thousands of man-made chemicals that have been in widespread use since their discovery in the 1930's for use in non-stick coatings.

PFAS have been widely commercialized since the 1950's and 1960's, not just as non-stick coatings, but for a myriad of other industrial, commercial and consumer benefits, including fire-fighting foams; water, oil, and stain repellants; fire-retardant materials; personal care products; and so much more. PFAS are ubiquitous in the environment, as well as in thousands of household, commercial and industrial products.

The same qualities which make these chemicals so useful and so versatile are unfortunately also what makes them incredibly persistent in the environment - and being both toxic and bioaccumulative, they have been linked to many adverse human health and environmental impacts.
