This is part of a series of organic chemistry courses usually offered in the second semester of organic chemistry. This lecture focuses on aldehydes and ketones and will help the student differentiate between the two and also be able to name them. It also covers an overview of oxidation and reduction and, finally, the preparation of aldehydes and ketones. This course is arranged into 5 parts as shown:

PART 1: Introduction and identification of aldehydes and ketones

Learn how to identify and name aldehydes and ketones

PART 2: Naming of aldehydes and ketones

PART 3: Oxidation and Reduction – the big picture

An overview of oxidation and reduction, transformations between alcohols, aldehydes/ketones and carboxylic acids using reducing agents (LiAlH4, LAH, NaBH4, Dibal, BH3) and oxidizing agents (PCC/any solvent and PDC/CH2Cl2)

PART 4:Preparation of aldehydes and ketones

Review of various methods for preparing aldehydes and ketones including oxidation of alcohols (PCC, PDC), reduction of carboxylic acid derivatives (Dibal, BH3, NaBH4, and LiAlH4), Friedel-Crafts acylation, hydration of alkynes, and ozonolysis.

PART 5: Practice problems for PARTS 1-4. These practice problems include naming aldehydes and ketones and reactions used for the preparation of aldehydes and ketones.

We plan to release the second (last part) of aldehydes and ketones.
