Description English learners take the IELTS test for many reasons. A primary purpose for taking the IELTS test for many English learners is to obtain admission to an American university undergraduate or graduate program of study. In order to be admitted, students require a particular test score. The purpose of the IELTS Test Preparation Courses is to provide students the opportunity to practice test-taking strategies which will help them increase their score on the IELTS while improving their overall listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in English. The course will meet three days a week for a period of two hours per class meeting and will be taught by fluent English speakers who have completed a bachelor’s degree and have taken at least one course in TESOL methodology. There are two courses: one course is designed for students who have received IELTS scores in the intermediate range; the other course is for students who have received scores in the advanced range. Placement in an IELTS course will be based on students’ previous IELTS score or successful completion of Level 6 in Boston Global Institute’s Academic Preparation Program. Students who have not previously taken the IELTS will be required to take a practice IELTS test and their score on the practice test will determine their placement into one of the two courses. The goal of the IELTS test preparation courses is to improve students’ English language skills, familiarize them with the types of speaking, listening, reading and writing tasks they will be required to perform on the IELTS test, and provide intensive practice in relevant test-taking strategies, so that students will be able to increase their IELTS score by .5.
