Is there a new version for the AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate exam for 2022?

AWS made an announcement last March 2022 that there would be a new version of their popular AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate exam. The new SAA exam code will be upgraded to SAA-C03 and was released on August 2022.

How long would be the current SAA-C02 exam version valid?

The last day to take the current SAA-C02 exam version would be on August 29 and after that date, you can only take the new SAA-C03 exam version. This is quite different from the previous exam update of the AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate exam two years ago (2020) where there is an overlap in which you can take both the current and the new version. Therefore, you have to make sure that you book the current SAA-C02 exam on or before August 29 if you need to recertify. The updated SAA-C03 exam version will be available for registration as early as July 26 of this year. The very first available day to take the SAA-C03 exam is on August 30, 2022.

How different is the current SAA-C02 exam compared with the new SAA-C03 version?

Based on our initial assessment, it seems that exam domains of both SAA-C02 and SAA-C03 are almost the same with slight differences. SAA-C02 has 4 exam domains which are the same as the new SAA-C03 exam version. The only difference is the original “Design Secure Applications and Architectures” exam domain which was renamed to “Design Secure Architectures” in the new SAA-C03 exam.

The official SAA-C03 exam guide also shows that it will incorporate the brand new cloud services that AWS recently released. Notably, this new version does not have an Exam Labs section unlike the recently released AWS Certified SysOps Administrator – Associate (SOA-C02) which does have exam labs included in its test. New AWS services in Machine Learning, Security, and Management are also present so prepare to focus on these topics.

What are the new exam topics that I should expect on the SAA-C03 exam?

To view the new SAA-C03 exam topics that you should prepare for, you have to check the official Exam Guide and look at its Appendix section. It contains an enumerated list of the related AWS services that are included in the exam. Moreover, it even includes a list of non-related AWS services that won’t show up in your actual AWS exam.

In Analytics, prepare to see Amazon Athena, AWS Data Exchange, AWS Data Pipeline, Amazon EMR, AWS Glue, Amazon Kinesis, AWS Lake Formation, Amazon Managed Streaming for Apache Kafka (Amazon MSK), Amazon OpenSearch Service (Amazon Elasticsearch Service), Amazon QuickSight and Amazon Redshift. For Application Integration, we’ll have Amazon AppFlow, AWS AppSync, Amazon EventBridge (Amazon CloudWatch Events), Amazon MQ, Amazon Simple Notification Service (Amazon SNS), Amazon Simple Queue Service (Amazon SQS), and AWS Step Functions.
